The “A Shared Voyage: China-U.S. Youth Friendship Program” concluded in Shanghai on 8 April 2026.

Liu performed outstandingly in the Hong Kong Regional Selection of the 15th National Marine Knowledge Competition, after which he was awarded the valuable opportunity to take part in the expedition. The programme was launched to echo with President Xi’s “50,000 in Five Years” initiative. It was jointly organised by the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, the China-United States Exchange Foundation, and the team of Ray Dalio, Founder of Bridgewater Associates. It also received support from the Second Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the China Center for International People-to-People Exchange of the Ministry of Education, and CUHK, among others.

The programme commenced in Hong Kong on 30 March 2026 and lasted for two weeks, with visits to Ningbo and Shanghai. Twenty young students from China and the United States boarded the China-U.S. Youth Friendship research vessel to explore the ocean and engage in cultural exchange. During the programme, participants visited historical and cultural landmarks, high-tech enterprises, new rural development, and urban civic centres, gaining a more authentic, multidimensional and comprehensive understanding of China.

“A Shared Voyage: China-U.S. Youth Friendship Program” officially kicked off in Hong Kong on 30 March 2026.

CUHK has long placed emphasis on international exchange and whole-person education. President Xi’s reply to Liu not only affirms his active participation in China-U.S. cultural exchange, but also serves as a powerful encouragement for the University’s commitment to nurturing students with both a strong sense of national identity and a global vision. CUHK will continue to support its students in telling the stories of China and Hong Kong on the international stage, and in contributing to friendship and exchange between peoples worldwide.
